Accessibility and Availability
Neighborhood
Watego's beach is the local's favourite beach in Byron Bay and one of the most desirable places to live in Australia. This small enclave of houses sits directly under the lighthouse in the centre of the Cape Byron Conservation area on the most easterly part of the Australian mainland. Watego's beach is the perfect beach for families. A wide sandy bay lined with pandanus palms at one end and a grassy park at the western end with public ammenities including BBQ's. The calm waters are ideal for swimming and it is the best place to see dolphins on a daily basis and whales between May and October. Famous for surfing, Wategos is perfect for beginners and seasoned shredders! The inside section is great for the kids while Mum or Dad surfs the point, the Bombie or drifts down to the long point breaks at The Pass. The walk to the lighthouse from Wategos takes in some of the most spectacular scenery the north coast has to offer. The sunrise or sunset from the lighthouse is a 'must do' while in the bay. It is preferable to have a car when staying here. Wategos is a 5 - 8min drive to the centre of town or a 35 min walk. The walk to town is part of the lighthouse trail and rated the number one thing to do in the bay, however, it is not lit at night so Uber or taxi is preferable. Coffee and snacks are available on the beachfront each day at Rae's restaurant or The Pass cafe is a 10 - 15min walk and the light house cafe a 20 - 30min walk. There is no public transport other than taxi or ride share. Airport shuttles will pick up and drop off.
